Some Thoughts About The Biggest Bang

I was kind of disappointed by my work on this book but I changed my mind during the last year...

In the Bigger Bang, the first book we did with D.J. Kirkbride I was more involved in the story asking for scenes or even adding elements to scenes.
Like the eggs sequence.

In this one I left the story to D.J. I felt like I owed it to him since we never used full scripts and I wanted to be responsible for the pacing myself.

Although his story and dialogues was so great in this one, very sophisticated and emotional.

The story for the Bang books was never brainless action anyway.

While I drew the second book my life was a mess. Not happy with my personal life involved in a crazy relationship that it could become a crazy book and I might do a crazy book inspired by the events one day...

But as I said this second book I really start to like it and maybe prefer it from the first one..

The first chapter had to be redrawn two weeks before deadline since we had to remove six pages of a flashback scene. That changed the pacing of the whole issue and I had this nonsensical decision to redraw the whole book. So... I also changed the style a bit with more clean lines and a bit different coloring.

The star gazing sequence is the only thing kept from the first version of the drawn pages...

Wyan s design was pretty much based on the girl I lived with that period...

The general style of this second series is a love letter to some nineties artists from Image comics that I liked...the Lees , Liefelds , Kieths and McFarlanes althought sawn through my own loose and weird filter...

The nine panel grid here on the above page is a reference to the nine grid panel used in the egg sequence on the first book..

Always wanted to use lots of white space instead of blacks...

The book was also a homage to the great western characters that Loene had in his films...something D.J. and I discussed a lot at the period...

In general the book is like a strange journal of the years I drew the story... and very personal in its own way...

I know D.J. is more satisfied with our work on this one more than the first one something I didn t undrstood first...
The book made it into some lists of the best comics of that year and even the covers were very well received critically....

Glad people liked these Bang books it means everything to me...

The Importance Of Work

So frustrated today... I wanna do so many things and life is so little time...
Also tired of people whining and not trying...

Most people don t even know what to do with their lives ...and it s strange because life is a gift!
Can 't stand people blaming the society...blaming their relatives... with beliefs that everybody owes them... no way... no one owes you anything... you have to be glad you live... glad you live this weird little dream we call life!

I 'm so confused today and I really hope these rows of words will wake me up too because I know what a bless is to live!:  )

And again...I want to do so many things and I don t think I did little efforts until now...

I still live in the place I was born and grew up... I publish my weird books with my weird art... I did everything I dreamt up. And damn I continue! .... and of course I won't stop...

Is it realistic art...is it cartoony art...is it comics pages or canvas work.... I will keep the ride...

...and always remind to myself how much important my work is for me...

I don' t remember when I did the sketch here... probably around 2012 when I was illustrating the first Augusta Wind book... but star gazing is something I love and always gives me hope....

Newspaper Illustration

I worked for a local newspaper for more than 2 years around 1998 to 2000.
Was producing more than 100 illustrations a month...

Here is one I found in my archives today.

The piece actually is two photocopies of the original drawings collaged as one piece...

Pre photoshop days...

Sketchbook Pages

I keep a sketchbook for years now. It 's the best way to help me think conceptually and some times experiment stylistically and technically...

These two are pretty realistic in anatomy. Not very colorful but this is the way I see things all my life anyway... without color I mean.

The man in the first pictures is my grand pa.... almost one hundred years old now...
I will tell some stories about him in the blog one day... since I believe he helped my creativity in a nice way when I was little...

Some other stuff some one can find in my sketchbooks are weird experiments in style like these...

Sketches

My good friend Vassilis Fotsinos sent me these sketches I did some years ago that he kept in his files...

These are sketches I did early 2014 while we attended London Super comic con... sketches of comics characters and some others inspired by people passed by the table at the cafe we were sitting.

I wanted to throw them away but he kept them instead.... and showed them to me again a few weeks ago.

Glad he did because they don 't look that bad actually. Another weird fact is I use to throw away lots of drawn paper....

the last sketch he sent me is from a signing I did at a local comics shop in town called Comics Cave ( a shop that no longer exits...) in 2009....

The book I signed then was Mister Universe ... a one shot I did for Image comics.

I remember when I did this hulk sketch what I had in mind was the Frankenstein monster like character from the Adams Family old black and white tv show....
